The Coatesville Red Raiders will host the Downingtown West Whippets boys basketball team in a RED OUT for Aidan’s Heart Foundation. Aidan’s Heart Foundation is a local 501(3)(c) non-profit organization that seeks to prevent death from SCA through screening young hearts, teaching CPR+AED skills to adults and youth, and facilitating the placement of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in local communities.
On November 12, 2021, Aidan’s Heart Foundation offered a free heart screening to athletes at Coatesville Area Senior High School and screened 142 students. Of those students, 11 were identified as having had potentially life-threatening conditions and have been recommended to follow-up with their doctor or pediatrician. Aidan’s Heart also ran a CPR+AED training session for the football team along with 185 other CASH student athletes.
WHO:
This school basketball event is open to the public. Tickets are required for the game and can be purchased at the door. The boys basketball game and RED OUT for Aidan’s Heart Foundation will be held Thursday, December 16th, 2021 at Coatesville Area Senior High School, 1445 Lincoln Hwy E., Coatesville, PA 19320.
WHY:
In response to the recent free heart screening and resulting findings, Coatesville Area High School is hosting this RED OUT event to support Aidan’s Heart Foundation. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the number one cause of death of youth athletes on school grounds. SCA usually happens without any warning signs or symptoms.
Between 2,000-9,000 young people suffer a sudden cardiac event each year. Many of the conditions that can cause SCA are preventable and highly treatable, but they are not detectable with a stethoscope. An EKG exam can detect approximately 70% of the conditions that cause SCA. By having your child’s heart screened with a simple, non-invasive EKG exam, you can minimize the risk of Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
